CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago Bears continued their strong start to the 2026 NFL season Thursday night, defeating the New England Patriots 30-24 at Soldier Field behind an impressive performance from quarterback Caleb Williams and a breakout receiving performance from Luther Burden III.
Williams threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, helping Chicago improve to 5-2 on the season. The victory marked the Bears’ fifth win in their first seven games and handed New England its third loss of the year, dropping the Patriots to 4-3.
The matchup featured two of the NFL’s most promising young quarterbacks, with Williams and New England’s Drake Maye combining for more than 600 passing yards in a competitive nationally televised contest. (Bleacher Report)
Chicago Takes Early Control
The Bears established momentum early, opening the scoring with a 43-yard field goal from Cairo Santos before running back D’Andre Swift found the end zone on a four-yard touchdown run.
Chicago carried a 10-0 advantage into the second quarter, benefiting from several explosive passing plays and an efficient offensive attack.
Burden emerged as Williams’ primary downfield threat, consistently creating separation and producing several of the game’s biggest plays.
The second-year receiver finished with four receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown, including a 58-yard gain that helped set up Chicago’s first touchdown.
New England eventually responded behind Maye, who scored on a seven-yard rushing touchdown to bring the Patriots within three points.
However, the Bears maintained control of the first half, adding a 31-yard Santos field goal before Williams connected with Burden on a 24-yard touchdown reception with just 14 seconds remaining before halftime.
The touchdown gave Chicago a 20-7 advantage and appeared to put the Bears comfortably ahead entering the break.

Patriots Deliver Stunning Touchdown Before Halftime
One of the most memorable moments of Thursday’s contest came on the final play of the first half.
With just three seconds remaining, New England faced a difficult situation near midfield.
Maye completed a short screen pass to running back Rhamondre Stevenson, who found open space and raced 48 yards into the end zone as time expired.
The unexpected touchdown cut Chicago’s advantage to 20-14 and completely changed the momentum heading into halftime.
According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Stevenson had just a 4.3% probability of scoring on the play.
The touchdown also increased New England’s estimated win probability from 10.2% to 24.5%, giving the Patriots renewed hope despite being outplayed for much of the opening half.
Stevenson finished the game with five receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown, providing Maye with an important option in the passing game. (USA Today)
Bears Hold Off New England’s Second-Half Push
Chicago responded to the disappointing conclusion of the first half by continuing to attack New England’s defense.
Williams maintained his effectiveness through the air, spreading the football around and helping the Bears regain a two-possession advantage during the third quarter.
Tight end Colston Loveland also contributed to Chicago’s passing attack, catching a 14-yard touchdown from Williams.
New England refused to go away, however.
Maye continued challenging the Bears’ secondary, finishing with 321 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception while completing 24 of his 31 attempts.
The Patriots remained within striking distance entering the closing stages of the game, but costly mistakes and missed opportunities prevented them from completing the comeback.
Chicago’s defense also delivered one of the game’s most important plays during the first half when linebacker D’Marco Jackson intercepted Maye in the red zone, preventing New England from potentially taking the lead.
Late in the fourth quarter, Santos connected on a 58-yard field goal to extend Chicago’s advantage and provide crucial insurance points.

Caleb Williams Continues Strong Development
Thursday’s performance represented another encouraging step forward for Williams, who has continued developing into the franchise quarterback Chicago envisioned when selecting him first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Williams completed 22 of 33 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns, finishing without a turnover against a New England defense that entered the game riding a three-game winning streak.
His ability to connect with Burden on explosive passing plays proved particularly important, repeatedly putting Chicago in scoring position.
Swift also provided balance offensively, rushing for 78 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.
The Bears’ offensive production demonstrated the potential of a young unit that has become increasingly dangerous when Williams is given time to operate.
Chicago’s performance was especially meaningful on a night when the organization honored legendary former player and head coach Mike Ditka.

Patriots’ Winning Streak Comes to an End
For New England, Thursday’s defeat ended a three-game winning streak and exposed several areas of concern despite another productive performance from Maye.
The Patriots entered the contest having won four of their first six games, establishing themselves as a competitive team in the AFC East.
However, turnovers, defensive breakdowns and untimely penalties proved costly against Chicago.
Maye’s 321 passing yards and three total touchdowns highlighted his ability to generate offense, but his first-half interception in the red zone prevented New England from capitalizing on an important scoring opportunity.
The Patriots also struggled to contain Burden, whose explosive receptions repeatedly shifted field position in Chicago’s favor.
New England will look to rebound in Week 8 against the Miami Dolphins as it attempts to remain competitive in the AFC playoff race.
Chicago Builds Momentum in NFC Playoff Race
With Thursday’s victory, the Bears improved to 5-2 and continued strengthening their position in the NFC playoff picture.
Chicago has now won five of its first seven games, demonstrating progress behind Williams and a developing group of young offensive playmakers.
While the Bears allowed New England to remain competitive throughout the second half, their ability to respond offensively and execute in critical situations ultimately made the difference.
For Williams, the performance offered another example of his growth as an NFL quarterback.
For Burden, it represented one of the most productive performances of his young professional career.
And for Chicago, the 30-24 victory provided another important result as the team continues pursuing its first postseason appearance since the 2020 season.
Final Score: Chicago Bears 30, New England Patriots 24.
