Kirill Marchenko delivered his most impressive performance yet in a Toronto Maple Leafs uniform Thursday night, recording his first hat trick with the organization in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres at Scotiabank Arena.
Playing in his 300th career NHL game, Marchenko scored three times through the opening two periods, giving Toronto a commanding 4-2 advantage before Buffalo mounted a third-period comeback. The performance marked the fifth hat trick of his NHL career and his first since arriving in Toronto from the Columbus Blue Jackets in September. (NHL)
Marchenko’s opening goal was arguably the highlight of the evening. With Toronto on the power play midway through the first period, the Russian forward received a pass from John Tavares near the goal line before pulling off a remarkable between-the-legs finish over Buffalo goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.
He added his second goal at 11:13 of the second period, firing a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle past Luukkonen to restore Toronto’s lead. Just over five minutes later, Marchenko completed the hat trick with a one-timer off a feed from Colton Sissons, sending hats raining onto the ice and giving the Maple Leafs a two-goal cushion heading into the final period. The three-goal outing provided an encouraging sign for Toronto’s offseason acquisition, who had scored just once in his first seven appearances with the Maple Leafs. Marchenko spent his first four NHL seasons in Columbus, establishing himself as a reliable offensive contributor before being traded to Toronto on September 28.
Despite Marchenko’s individual brilliance, the Maple Leafs were unable to preserve their lead.
Auston Matthews opened the scoring just 2:24 into the contest, extending his goal-scoring streak to three games. Buffalo’s Jack Quinn responded with two goals of his own, keeping the Sabres within striking distance before Toronto took control in the second period.
The momentum shifted dramatically in the third.
Dennis Gilbert brought Buffalo within one at 10:05 before Mattias Samuelsson tied the game just over two minutes later. Toronto struggled to regain its offensive rhythm, and the Sabres eventually completed the comeback when Owen Power scored at 3:14 of overtime, securing the 5-4 victory. (Sportsnet)
The Maple Leafs also suffered a concerning setback when veteran forward John Tavares exited the game following a collision with Buffalo’s Josh Norris early in the third period. Tavares had recorded two assists before departing.
For Toronto, the loss overshadowed what could have been a memorable night for one of its newest offensive weapons. Marchenko’s performance offered a glimpse of the scoring ability that made him an attractive addition to the Maple Leafs’ lineup, but the team’s inability to protect a two-goal lead ultimately proved costly.
Toronto falls to 3-3-2 on the season, while Buffalo improves to 4-3-1.
Marchenko may not have gotten the victory he deserved, but his first hat trick in blue and white provided an early reminder of the offensive talent he brings to Toronto. (NHL)
