Minnesota Reclaims Little Brown Jug as Michigan Continues to Struggle

Minnesota delivered one of its biggest wins in the Little Brown Jug rivalry in decades Saturday, upsetting No. 24 Michigan 20-14 at Huntington Bank Stadium and beating the Wolverines at home for the first time since 1977.

Michigan entered halftime leading 14-7 despite an uneven offensive performance. Jordan Marshall scored on a five-yard run in the second quarter, while linebacker Nathaniel Staehling returned an interception 79 yards for a touchdown to give the Wolverines a seven-point advantage.

The second half belonged to Minnesota.

Luke Drzewiecki connected on field goals of 31 and 26 yards to pull the Golden Gophers within one before Drake Lindsey found Darius Taylor for a three-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, giving Minnesota a 20-14 lead. Taylor finished with two touchdowns, also scoring on a two-yard run during Minnesota’s opening possession.

Minnesota’s defense made sure the lead held. The Gophers limited Michigan to just 82 yards on 24 second-half plays, while Bryce Underwood finished 10-of-21 passing for 101 yards. Michigan was held to 180 total yards and committed three turnovers.

The Wolverines had one final opportunity to take the lead, but Underwood’s fourth-down pass from midfield fell incomplete with 37 seconds remaining, allowing Minnesota to run out the clock.

The victory moved Minnesota to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play and gave the program its first win over Michigan since 2014. It was an even longer wait in Minneapolis, where the Gophers had not beaten the Wolverines since a 16-0 victory in 1977. Fans stormed the field following the win as Minnesota reclaimed the Little Brown Jug.

For Michigan, the loss continued a difficult start to conference play. The Wolverines fell to 3-2 after consecutive losses to Iowa and Minnesota, with an offense that has now failed to reach 20 points in four of its first five games.

Michigan will have a bye before returning home to face Penn State on Oct. 17, while Minnesota travels to Purdue on Oct. 10.
