Nikita Kucherov Makes Lightning History, Passes Steven Stamkos as Franchise’s All-Time Points Leader

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Nikita Kucherov has officially cemented his place at the top of the Tampa Bay Lightning record books.

The 33-year-old superstar became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer Saturday night, surpassing longtime teammate and former Lightning captain Steven Stamkos with his 1,138th career point during Tampa Bay’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Utah Mammoth.

Kucherov reached the historic milestone in the first period, recording an assist on Brayden Point’s power-play goal at the 12:42 mark. The achievement moved him past Stamkos, who accumulated 1,137 points during his 16 seasons with Tampa Bay before departing for the Nashville Predators in 2024. (NHL)

The moment was immediately recognized by Kucherov’s teammates, who poured onto the ice to congratulate him as he officially became the most productive offensive player in the organization’s history.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Kucherov’s accomplishment is how quickly he reached the milestone.

Kucherov needed just 890 regular-season games to surpass Stamkos, who recorded his 1,137 points across 1,082 appearances with the Lightning. That difference of 192 games illustrates the extraordinary offensive production Kucherov has maintained throughout his NHL career.

At the time of the record-breaking assist, Kucherov had accumulated 405 goals and 733 assists, compared to Stamkos’ 555 goals and 582 assists during his time in Tampa Bay. While Stamkos remains the franchise’s most prolific goal scorer, Kucherov’s remarkable playmaking ability has now carried him to the top of the overall scoring list. (Associated Press)

From Second-Round Selection to Franchise Legend

Kucherov’s journey to becoming Tampa Bay’s all-time leading scorer began when the Lightning selected him in the second round of the 2011 NHL Draft.

Making his NHL debut during the 2013-14 season, Kucherov quickly developed into one of the league’s most dangerous offensive players. His combination of exceptional vision, creativity, puck control and scoring ability eventually established him among the NHL’s elite.

Over the following decade, Kucherov became the driving force behind one of hockey’s most successful organizations, helping Tampa Bay capture consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021.

His individual accomplishments have been equally impressive.

Kucherov has won three Art Ross Trophies as the NHL’s leading point scorer and two Hart Memorial Trophies as the league’s most valuable player. His second Hart Trophy came following the 2025-26 season, when he recorded an extraordinary 130 points, including 44 goals and 86 assists.

Those accomplishments have made Kucherov one of the defining offensive talents of his generation, and his latest milestone adds another significant achievement to an already decorated career. (Lightning)

Surpassing the Player Who Helped Build Tampa Bay’s Dynasty

Passing Stamkos carries additional significance because of the history the two players share.

For more than a decade, Stamkos served as the face of the Lightning organization, becoming one of the NHL’s premier goal scorers and eventually leading Tampa Bay to consecutive Stanley Cup championships as team captain.

Kucherov developed alongside Stamkos during that championship era, forming part of an offensive core that consistently placed the Lightning among the Eastern Conference’s strongest contenders.

Together, they helped transform Tampa Bay into one of the NHL’s most successful franchises, reaching four Stanley Cup Finals between 2015 and 2022 and winning two championships.

Stamkos originally became Tampa Bay’s all-time points leader in April 2022, surpassing franchise legend Martin St. Louis. His record stood for approximately four and a half years before Kucherov overtook him Saturday night.

Although Stamkos remains one of the most influential players in Lightning history, Kucherov’s achievement represents a changing of the guard in the franchise’s record books.

The two players built much of their legacies together, and their contributions will remain central to the organization’s history long after their playing careers conclude. (theScore)

Historic Night Comes Despite Overtime Defeat

Despite Kucherov’s individual achievement, Tampa Bay was unable to finish the evening with a victory.

The Lightning established a 3-1 advantage during the first period and extended their lead to 4-2 in the second. However, Utah responded with consecutive goals from Anders Lee and Dmitri Simashev to even the score before the third period.

After a scoreless final regulation period, Simashev completed Utah’s comeback with the overtime winner just 1:44 into the extra session, securing a 5-4 victory for the Mammoth.

The defeat left Tampa Bay with a 7-3-1 record, although the night will ultimately be remembered for Kucherov’s historic accomplishment rather than the final score. (NHL)

Following the game, Kucherov acknowledged the significance of the record while expressing disappointment over the result.

“It means a lot,” Kucherov said, crediting the teammates and others who have been part of his career in Tampa Bay.

Lightning head coach Jon Cooper also praised the veteran forward’s exceptional hockey intelligence, describing him as one of the smartest players he has ever coached. (Lightning)

A Legacy That Continues to Grow

With the franchise scoring record now belonging to Kucherov, the question becomes just how far he can extend his lead.

At 33 years old, Kucherov remains one of the NHL’s most productive offensive players, showing few signs of slowing down following another MVP-winning campaign.

His continued ability to produce at an elite level could allow him to establish a franchise scoring mark that stands for decades.

For years, Stamkos represented the standard of offensive excellence in Tampa Bay. Now, Kucherov has surpassed that standard while helping preserve the competitive identity the two stars established together.

From a second-round draft selection to a two-time Stanley Cup champion, multiple-time league MVP and now the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, Kucherov has assembled one of the most accomplished careers in Lightning history.

And with his career still ongoing, Tampa Bay’s newest record holder has an opportunity to make that legacy even more difficult for future generations to surpass.
