Fantilli Delivers Overtime Winner as Blue Jackets Look to Build Momentum Despite Rough Start

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Blue Jackets have struggled to find consistency through the opening weeks of the 2026-27 NHL season, but Saturday night’s overtime victory against the Vegas Golden Knights provided a much-needed reason for optimism.

Adam Fantilli scored just 59 seconds into overtime, lifting Columbus to a 2-1 victory over Vegas at Nationwide Arena and snapping a two-game losing streak. The win improved the Blue Jackets to 4-5-0, offering an encouraging response following a difficult stretch in which they had dropped four of their previous five games.

Although Columbus remains below .500, Saturday’s performance demonstrated the type of resilience and defensive discipline the team will need to establish if it hopes to climb back into the Eastern Conference playoff conversation. (NHL)

Fantilli Comes Through in Overtime

With the game tied 1-1 after regulation, Columbus received an early opportunity to end the contest when Vegas defenseman Shea Theodore was called for holding Matthew Knies just 15 seconds into overtime.

The Blue Jackets capitalized almost immediately.

Working on a four-on-three power play, Charlie Coyle delivered a pass to Fantilli near the bottom of the right faceoff circle. The 22-year-old forward wasted little time, firing a sharp-angle one-timer past Golden Knights goaltender Carter Hart to secure the victory.

The goal was Fantilli’s third of the season and carried additional significance for a Columbus power play that had struggled considerably through the opening nine games.

Before Fantilli’s winner, the Blue Jackets had failed to convert on 22 consecutive power-play opportunities, with their previous success coming during the season opener against Buffalo on October 1.

For a team searching for offensive consistency, finally breaking that drought in a game-deciding situation represented an important development.

Following the victory, Fantilli expressed appreciation for the fans who had continued supporting the team through its uneven opening stretch.

“We really deserve, our fans really deserve, a game like that,” Fantilli said. “They’ve stuck with us, and I’m happy they showed up tonight and I’m happy we were able to get them a win.” (Blue Jackets)

Columbus Finds a Way in Defensive Battle

The Blue Jackets opened the scoring midway through the first period when defenseman Denton Mateychuk converted a pass from Kent Johnson at the 11:51 mark.

Mateychuk moved toward the net before lifting a backhand shot past Hart, giving Columbus an early 1-0 advantage. Johnson recorded one of his two assists on the evening, continuing to contribute offensively for the Blue Jackets.

Vegas responded later in the opening period.

At 17:13, Tomas Hertl capitalized on a rebound following a scoring opportunity from Braeden Bowman, beating Columbus goaltender Cam Talbot to even the game at 1-1.

Neither team managed to score during the second or third periods, turning the contest into a battle between the two goaltenders.

Talbot delivered one of his strongest performances of the young season, stopping 26 of 27 shots, including 13 in the third period alone.

Vegas controlled much of the final regulation period, outshooting Columbus 13-5, but Talbot prevented the Golden Knights from completing the comeback.

Hart was equally effective at the opposite end, recording 18 saves before Fantilli finally broke through in overtime.

The victory improved Columbus to 3-0 in games extending beyond regulation this season, an encouraging statistic for a team that has otherwise struggled to produce consistent results. (Reuters)

A 4-5 Start That Doesn’t Tell the Entire Story

Nine games into the season, the Blue Jackets have yet to establish themselves as a consistent contender.

Columbus has experienced difficulties generating offense, maintaining momentum between games and capitalizing on special-teams opportunities.

The team’s 4-5-0 record reflects those struggles, particularly during a recent stretch in which victories have been difficult to come by.

However, there are encouraging developments beneath the disappointing record.

The Blue Jackets have shown an ability to compete in close games, and their unbeaten record beyond regulation suggests they have the offensive talent and composure to deliver in critical moments.

Saturday’s victory was particularly meaningful because it came against a Vegas team that entered the contest with an 8-4-1 record.

Rather than relying on an offensive outburst, Columbus secured the victory through strong goaltending, disciplined defensive play and timely execution on special teams.

Those are qualities that can translate into more sustainable success as the season progresses.

The challenge now is turning isolated performances into a consistent identity.

Columbus has demonstrated flashes of its potential, but the difference between a promising young team and a legitimate playoff contender often comes down to avoiding prolonged losing stretches.

Saturday’s victory does not erase the struggles of the opening weeks. It does, however, provide a foundation to build upon. (NHL)

Fantilli’s Development Remains Central to Columbus’ Future

For Columbus, perhaps the most encouraging aspect of Saturday’s victory was the player responsible for delivering it.

Fantilli continues to develop into one of the franchise’s most important offensive contributors, and his ability to produce in decisive moments will be critical to the Blue Jackets’ long-term success.

Selected third overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, Fantilli arrived in Columbus with expectations of becoming a cornerstone of the organization’s rebuilding efforts.

Now in his fourth NHL season, the young center is being counted on to provide more than occasional offensive highlights.

His responsibilities continue to grow as the Blue Jackets look to establish a younger, more competitive core capable of challenging the Metropolitan Division’s established contenders.

Fantilli’s combination of size, speed, shooting ability and offensive instincts gives Columbus a player capable of changing games with a single opportunity.

Saturday’s winner demonstrated exactly that.

In a tightly contested game where scoring chances were limited, Fantilli capitalized when his team needed him most.

His continued development, alongside players such as Kent Johnson, Denton Mateychuk and Zach Werenski, will play a significant role in determining how quickly Columbus can establish itself as a consistent playoff contender.

Can the Blue Jackets Turn One Victory Into Lasting Momentum?

The Blue Jackets have reason to feel encouraged following Saturday’s result, but the coming weeks will provide a clearer indication of whether the team is beginning to find its rhythm.

Head coach Rick Bowness has emphasized the importance of improving Columbus’ execution, particularly on the power play.

Following Fantilli’s winner, Bowness acknowledged the significance of finally converting with the man advantage after an extended scoring drought.

The breakthrough could provide an important confidence boost for a power-play unit that has struggled to produce despite possessing several talented offensive players.

Equally important will be the team’s ability to replicate Saturday’s defensive performance.

Talbot’s 26-save outing demonstrated the value of reliable goaltending, particularly during stretches when Columbus is unable to generate consistent offense.

With Jet Greaves also available, the Blue Jackets have options in net as they attempt to stabilize their early-season results.

Columbus will now turn its attention to Tuesday’s road matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers, where it will have an opportunity to build on Saturday’s victory. (Blue Jackets)

At 4-5-0, the Blue Jackets remain a work in progress.

There are still questions surrounding their offensive consistency, special teams and ability to compete over an extended stretch of games.

But with a young core continuing to develop and players such as Fantilli beginning to deliver in important moments, there is reason to believe Columbus could be better than its early record suggests.

One overtime victory will not define the Blue Jackets’ season.

However, if Columbus can build on Saturday’s performance, Fantilli’s game-winning goal against Vegas could eventually be remembered as an early turning point in a season that began with more frustration than success.
